Biography
Background
Kaschkasch is a design studio founded in 2011 by Florian Kallus and Sebastian Schneider. The studio is based in Cologne, Germany, and the duo works in furniture, lighting design and art direction for national and international clients. Both founders trained as cabinet makers before studying product design, so hands-on practice and academic education sit together in their method.
Signature Style
The studio treats design as a helpful and practical part of life that conveys character and attitudes through the expressiveness of restraint. Its formal language combines straightforwardness and beauty and sits on the line between function and formal severity, with results described as modest, challenging, intelligent and logical. Traditional craftsmanship techniques are paired with an interest in innovation, disruption and new technological solutions.
Notable Works
For Audo Copenhagen the studio designed Zet, a shelving system dated 2017 on its own work page, built from two components: wooden u-shaped shelves and a metal frame. Its client list also names Blomus, Bolia, Hay, Ligne Roset, Normann Copenhagen, Rolf Benz and Villeroy & Boch, among many others. Stay, a recliner for Blomus from 2020, received a German Design Award.
Legacy
Kaschkasch continues to work as a duo. Collaboration and discussion are described as central to its practice, and the studio says it questions prevailing norms and offers new answers to existing everyday demands.
