Biography

Background

Julien Renault is a French designer who grew up near Paris. He studied industrial design at ESAD Design & Art School in Reims, France, and at ECAL in Switzerland, two educations that gave his work both objective, rational methods and artistic, personal freedom. His studio, Julienrenaultobjects, is a multidisciplinary design office based in Brussels, Belgium. Since September 2023 he has taught industrial product design in the Master programme at La Cambre in Brussels.

Signature Style

His studio works from basic elements, natural colours and fundamental materials. Renault treats an object as closely connected to its environment and to the many ways it is perceived and used. He works across product design, photography and interior space, and each project starts from a defining element that accompanies the concept from start to finish.

Notable Works

  • Pastis collection of wooden chairs, armchairs and tables (HAY, available worldwide since August 2022)
  • Layout chair and armchair with a mix-and-match shell (HAY)
  • Compass pendant and floor lamps (HAY)
  • Deville collection of aluminium chairs, armchairs and tables (HAY)
  • Lift sofa (Mor), inspired by the metal frame structure of elevators

Legacy

Renault was named Designer of the year 2023 by Knack Weekend and Le Vif Weekend and showed his work in solo shows at Kortrijk Expo and at Gare Maritime in Brussels. His Café Gyproc won the space design award at the Biennale Interieur in 2018, and his Hand Forged series won first prize at the D3 Contest at the IMM fair in Cologne in 2010.
