Background
Danish architect and designer Jørgen Rasmussen (1931-2024) was born in Odense on 26 April 1931. He graduated in 1955, the school being the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and in 1957 he and his twin brother, Ib, started a studio with a focus on single-family houses.
Signature Style
Rasmussen was an advocate of user-driven design. The Kevi chair has a backrest with flexibility that supports the lower back and spine, and a height-adjustable feature. A line attributed to him reads "The better you sit, the more you get done".
Notable Works
- Kevi chair, from 1958, designed for Kevi A/S and a multi-purpose work chair for office and home by the 1960s
- Kevi double-wheel castor (1965), awarded the ID Prize and added to the Danish Cultural Canon in 2006
- A villa for Kevi's CEO, Bent Harlang, designed with his brother Ib
Legacy
Rasmussen died on 23 October 2024, aged 93. Montana Furniture manufactures the Kevi chair series, which it describes as a symbol of Danish craftsmanship and thoughtful design.
