Biography

Background

Jerszy Seymour was born in Berlin in 1968 and grew up in London. He studied at South Bank Polytechnic (1987-1990) and took Industrial Design at the Royal College of Art (1991-1993), then moved to Milan to work on independent projects. In 2004 he moved to Berlin and founded the Jerszy Seymour Design Workshop.

Signature Style

For him design means making situations that aim to change reality, with humour, a tainted sense of poetry and the Non-Gesamt Gesamtkunstwerk as guides. His studio calls its method entangled or "dirty", weighing engineering and material exploration equally with humour and poetics, across objects, installations, film, performance, music and writing.

Notable Works

He has designed products and strategies for companies including Magis, Vitra and Alessi; for Magis, the Bureaurama collection. His studio lists exhibitions such as Lowlife (Galerie Kreo, Paris, 2003), Tape (Palais de Tokyo, 2003), Amateur Workshop #1 (Centre Pompidou, 2011) and Acid Tracks (Galerie Kreo, 2022).

Legacy

Pieces by him are in the collections of MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou, the MAK in Vienna, the Vitra Design Museum and Die Neue Sammlung, among others. Since 2011 he has been co-founder and director of the Dirty Art Department at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam.
