Background
James Irvine was born in London and completed his Royal College of Art studies in 1984. He moved to Milan that year to work as a design consultant for Olivetti, then spent time at the Toshiba Design Centre in Tokyo in 1987 while establishing his own Milan practice.
Signature Style
Arper describes Irvine's work through geometric formalism, an independent outlook and attention to the end user's quality of life. Precision, irony and generosity became the guiding terms for Studio Irvine after his death.
Notable Works
His career included industrial-design responsibility at Sottsass Associati from 1993 to 1999. Arper lists Juno 02 among his collections for the brand.
Legacy
The Royal Society of Arts elected Irvine a Royal Designer for Industry in 2004. Following his death in 2013, his Milan office continued as Studio Irvine, carrying the practice into a new phase.
