Biography
Background
Hans Sandgren Jakobsen was born on 7 August 1963. He served his apprenticeship as a cabinet-maker in 1986 and studied at the Danish Design School in Copenhagen from 1986 to 1990. After a period at COBO Design in Nagoya, Japan, he worked in Nanna Ditzel's drawing office in Copenhagen. His studio at the harbour of Grenaa has existed in its present form since 1999.
Signature Style
He believes in "less is more": a piece of furniture should consist of the essential only, so that it appears clean and simple with international appeal. He sees himself as making functional designs for everyday life rather than art, and names innovation, aesthetics and functionality as the qualities he values. Models are built so a design can be touched, sat in and used before drawings go to the manufacturer.
