Biography

Background

Günter Eberle was head of the Thonet architecture department in Frankenberg. Thonet's designer page says little is known about him: apart from an extensive paper he wrote in 1956, titled "Information on advertising, design and construction" and written as working instructions for product development and marketing, there are very few documents from or about him.

Signature Style

What remains of him are various furniture designs created during his time at Thonet, some of them award winning. Thonet's creative director Norbert Ruf says he set the organic against precision in his award-winning design.

Notable Works

  • S 661 moulded plywood chair (1954), silver medal at the Triennale in Milan in 1954 and the iF Product Design Award the same year
  • S 661 DR swivel chair and S 661 H barstool, listed on Thonet's designer page

Legacy

Thonet relaunched the S 661 in January 2022 and the chair was selected for the exhibition Thonet and Design at Die Neue Sammlung in Munich.
