Description
Overview
The S 661 is a moulded plywood chair on a tubular steel frame. Thonet's product page lists it as designed by Günter Eberle in 1954 and calls it a real all-rounder for dining areas and kitchens, living rooms, home offices and public spaces such as restaurants and waiting areas. The range has the plywood-shell S 661, the upholstered S 661 SPV (seat with full upholstery) and S 661 PV (full upholstery), the S 661 DR swivel chair and the S 661 H barstool, the last two also with upholstered versions.
Construction
The seat shell is moulded plywood in walnut, oak, or natural or stained beech, and the tubular steel frame is either chrome-plated or powder-coated. Thonet lists the swivel chair on a five-star base with black castors.

Story
Triennale, 1954
Thonet's page and brochure say Eberle's design for the S 661 moulded plywood chair, with its elegantly curved seat shell, won a silver medal at the Triennale design exhibition in Milan in 1954 and the iF Product Design Award in the same year. Eberle was then head of the Thonet architecture department in Frankenberg.
Relaunch
Thonet's January 2022 press release presents a revival of the chair in beech, oak or walnut with a tubular steel frame. Creative Director Norbert Ruf says Eberle set the organic against precision in the design.
