Modernist architect and designer

Ferdinand Kramer (1898–1985) was a German modernist architect and designer. e15 describes consistency, functional use, balanced proportions and craftsmanship across furniture from different periods of his life.

New Frankfurt and Stuttgart

In 1925 Kramer worked in Frankfurt's municipal standardisation department within Ernst May's New Frankfurt programme. Some of his furniture appeared at the Weissenhof Estate exhibition ‘Die Wohnung,’ supervised by Mies van der Rohe.

New York and knock-down furniture

Kramer lived in exile in New York from 1938 to 1952. e15 highlights his knock-down designs as pioneering modern flat-pack furniture shaped by his encounter with American life.

Return to Frankfurt

In 1952 he became building director of Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, designing the interiors of 23 university buildings that he also planned and realised. e15 works with his family and archive on re-editions spanning the 1920s, his American exile and the 1950s.
