Biography
Background
Dozsa & van Dalfsen is a design and architecture studio based in Amsterdam, started in 1997 by Julia Dozsa and Jan van Dalfsen. Julia Dozsa (born 1960) studied architecture for two years and then graduated in industrial design from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. Jan van Dalfsen (born 1959) graduated in mathematics, with a specialization in topology, at the University of Amsterdam, then studied architecture and building technique at the Polytechnic of Amsterdam while working for a building contractor.
Signature Style
The two work together and also separately, for corporate and private clients, on furniture, product and interior design and on architecture. They say the variety of their backgrounds and the synergy it can generate shapes their designs, and that cooperation with skilled craftsmen is an important source of inspiration. Images from art, nature, architecture and design, respect for the context of a project and room for intuition guide the work.
Notable Works
Their Ligne Roset designs are the Apuso and rondone occasional tables, the Bojagi rug and the Courbell low table. They received the Elle Decoration Award 2003 for Best Accessory Design for the Nembus vases designed for Driade.
Legacy
Clients of the studio include Calligaris, Driade, Fiam Italia, Glas Italia and Ikea. A December 2003 exhibition at Yamagiwa Corporation in Japan showed all of their work for Driade, and their architectural projects in the Netherlands include apartment blocks, shop interiors and the transformation of old extensions into five small houses in Haarlem.
