Biography
Background
Charles Rennie Mackintosh was born in Glasgow in 1868 and died in London on 10 December 1928, according to Cassina. He trained as an architect from 1883 or 1884 and became a partner in Honeyman, Keppie & Mackintosh in 1901, per the University of Glasgow's Mackintosh Architecture project.
Signature Style
Cassina calls him the animator and most authoritative exponent of the Glasgow School, who recovered the most authentic values of the Scottish idiom and of neo-Gothic taste. His chairs resolve the composition in forms that are sometimes fluent and delicate and sometimes severely geometric.
Notable Works
- Glasgow School of Art, completed as his most remarkable work according to the Mackintosh Architecture essay
- Windyhill at Kilmacolm and Hill House at Helensburgh
- Decorative work for Miss Cranston's Tea Rooms in Glasgow
- The Berlino Table, Willow 1 and Hill House 1 in Cassina's I Maestri collection
Legacy
Cassina places him among the personalities that characterise the period immediately preceding the Modern Movement, and its I Maestri collection pays special attention to his chair designs.
