Biography

Background

Afteroom is a Stockholm design studio founded and led by Hung-Ming Chen and Chen-Yen Wei. Partners in life as well as design, the Taiwanese-born couple moved from Taiwan to Sweden in 2006, where Hung-Ming studied design at Konstfack in Stockholm, and they have since settled in the Swedish capital. Hung-Ming brings a background as an industrial and interior designer working with 3D software and mass production; Chen-Yen takes charge of the overall appearance, proportion and colour.

Signature Style

The studio's philosophy pivots around simplicity and honesty and an interest in form, proportion, materiality and how objects are experienced over time. Afteroom calls itself an advocate of the traces of time: it wants to create objects people will not tire of and will keep for generations.

Notable Works

The Afteroom Chair for Audo Copenhagen (formerly MENU) — a homage to Bauhaus and functionalism — grew into the Afteroom Collection of dining, counter and bar chairs, stools and coat hangers. The 3-leg version (2012) has been in the permanent collection of the Röhsska Museum since 2021. Other work includes the Melete Chair and Hout collection for Keilhauer, the Crux collection for Division Twelve and the Garzetta table for Andreu World.

Legacy

Afteroom Chair won Furniture of the Year at the Residence Stora Formpris (2014); the studio was Elle Decoration Swedish Design Awards Rising Star (2015) and has since won Best of NeoCon, Good Design and German Design Award honours.
