Launch and awards
Artemide gives 1987 as the launch year of the Tolomeo lamp by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina; Wikipedia dates the design to 1986. De Lucchi and Fassina won the Compasso d'Oro in 1989 for Tolomeo.
The idea
A balanced-arm lamp with external steel tension cables attached to springs inside the arms; De Lucchi: "No desk lamp should make you use two hands to position it."
