Collection Story
Origin
Stretch is a series of pine seating by Simon Legald for Normann Copenhagen, introduced with a press release dated June 2023. Legald's own comment there is that the idea was to give pine the main role. He points to the strength of the timber and to how tall and quickly the tree grows, which lets planks be cut very long and straight.
Design Language
Normann Copenhagen's phrase for the look is utilitarian minimalism: nothing superfluous is added, and the language is described as simple, uncomplicated and welcoming. The long solid planks are meant to convey robustness, durability and quality, and every piece is made from planks that run its whole length and have a certain thickness, so that the strength and beauty of the wood show. Over the years the pine is expected to gain a patina that more homogeneous woods do not develop, and the pieces are meant to last a lifetime. A clear matt UV varnish on the wood gives protection against sunlight.
Key Pieces
Three pieces make up the series: a 40 cm stool, a 160 cm bench and a 200 cm bench. The fact sheet overview gives each a height of 45 cm and a width of 40 cm, with lengths of 40, 160 and 200 cm. In the press release the stool is named as a side table or nightstand, while the benches are named as seating for a long hallway or one side of a dining table.
