Collection Story
Origin
The Officina collection is one of three complete furniture collections that Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec have designed for Magis, working with the company since 2004 alongside Striped and Steelwood. The Magis Officina Dining catalogue describes forging, the process of shaping iron between hammer and anvil, as a technique with a history of millennia, and says the collection explores a new creative language within that ancient process.
Design Language
The catalogue states that every piece has a forged iron structure that keeps the allure of a raw material handed down through the centuries, with slight imperfections that make each piece unique. It describes an unmistakably industrial feel combined with a refined and elegant spirit, and quotes the designers saying that the essence of wrought iron is imperfect, lively and close to drawing techniques.
Key Pieces
The range spans tables and low tables, chairs, low chairs, stools, benches, coat stands and a mirror, and upholstered pieces: two armchairs, an ottoman and two- and three-seater sofas. A bookcase system has wrought iron uprights with shelves in walnut-veneered or black painted MDF. Tables take tops in electro-galvanized steel plate, American walnut, tempered glass or Carrara marble. Officina Table is dated 2015 and Officina Chair 2016 on their Magis pages.
