Collection Story
Origin
Hans Hopfer, a painter, sculptor and designer, drew the first Mah Jong for Roche Bobois in 1971. The house links it to the hippie trail of that decade and counts it among its best-known creations. The name now covers a family of pieces rather than a single sofa.
Design Language
The family is built from loose cushions that sit directly on the floor: seats, straight backs, corner backs, lounge-chair seats and panoramic corner units. Because nothing is fixed, the cushions are laid out in whatever composition a room needs. Plain fabrics came first; later editions were dressed by fashion houses, with Kenzo Takada, Missoni and Jean Paul Gaultier as the named collaborators.
