Collection Story
Origin
Foliage is a Kartell collection of upholstered seating designed by Patricia Urquiola. Kartell's pages describe it as a family of soft chairs whose two key pieces, a two-seater sofa and an armchair, seem to have grown naturally. Urquiola's own project page for Foliage frames it as a dialogue between the natural and the artificial.
Design Language
Both pieces share one seat idea, a crown of top-stitched leaves. Urquiola's project page speaks of a framework of branches below that crown and of a soft upholstered seat with front-to-back top-stitched embroidery. The data sheet lists painted steel tubes for the legs in five finishes, removable covers, and four fabric families named Shirley melange, Skorpios chenille, Velvet and Trevira.
Key Pieces
The library holds the Foliage Sofa and the Foliage Armchair, data sheet codes 6085 and 6086. The same sheet also describes a customised option for common areas that uses the client's own cloth.
