起源
イームズとハーマンミラーの関係は、成形合板から始まりました。1940年代初頭、チャールズ＆レイ・イームズは米国海軍から、軽量な成形合板製の脚副木の開発を依頼されました。1946年、ハーマンミラーは「イームズ成形合板チェア」「成形合板ラウンジチェア」「折りたたみスクリーン」「コーヒーテーブル」を発表しました。同年、ニューヨーク近代美術館では「New Furniture Designed by Charles Eames（チャールズ・イームズによる新しい家具）」展が開催されています。1947年、ハーマンミラーは成形合板製品の独占的な販売・流通権を獲得しました。
デザインの言語
洗練されてモダン、遊び心がありながら機能的——ハーマンミラーはこれを**「イームズルック」と呼んでいます。どのプロジェクトも、同じ問いから始まりました。「私たちを魅了するか？」「さらによくできるか？」「『真剣な遊び心』になるか？」。ひとつの素材が次の素材へとつながり、成形合板から成形ファイバーグラス**のシーティング（1950年）へ、さらにはキャストアルミニウムやレザーへと発展していきました。チャールズはこう語っています。「ディテールはディテールではない。それが製品をつくるのだ。」
