기원
이므스 밀러(Herman Miller)와 임스의 인연은 성형 합판에서 시작되었습니다. 1940년대 초, 찰스 임스와 레이 임스는 미 해군으로부터 가볍고 성형된 합판 다리 부목 개발을 의뢰받았습니다. 1946년 허먼 밀러는 임스 성형 합판 의자, 성형 합판 라운지 체어, 폴딩 스크린, 커피 테이블을 선보였으며, 같은 해 뉴욕 현대미술관(MoMA)은 "찰스 임스가 디자인한 새로운 가구(New Furniture Designed by Charles Eames)" 전시를 열었습니다. 1947년 허먼 밀러는 성형 합판 제품에 대한 독점 시장 및 유통 권한을 얻었습니다.
디자인 언어
군더더기 없이 모던하면서도 유쾌하고 기능적인 디자인. 허먼 밀러는 이를 **"임스 룩(Eames look)"**이라 부릅니다. 모든 프로젝트는 같은 질문에서 출발했습니다. 흥미로운가? 더 나을 수 있는가? "진지한 재미(serious fun)"를 줄 수 있는가? 한 소재가 다음 소재로 이어졌습니다. 성형 합판은 성형 유리섬유(molded fiberglass) 시팅(1950)으로, 이후에는 주조 알루미늄과 가죽으로 발전했습니다. 찰스는 이렇게 말했습니다. "디테일은 디테일이 아닙니다. 그것이 제품을 완성합니다."
