Collection Story
Origin
The Domus Collection brings together two chairs by Ilmari Tapiovaara, both dated 1946: the Domus Chair and the Domus Lounge Chair. Artek ties them to a furniture series for the students of Domus Academica, the student housing in Helsinki, Finland.
Design Language
Artek names a distinctive aesthetic and characteristic short arms as what the two chairs share, and calls both comfortable enough for long periods of sitting. Its story page traces the design to Tapiovaara's time in Karelia during the Second World War, where he discovered the local forest culture that left a lasting mark on his approach to modern design. The Domus Chair is offered with or without upholstery.
