Collection Story

Origin

Catch is Jaime Hayon's chair family for &Tradition. The product pages describe how Hayon began working on it by sketching a man with open arms, and Hayon is quoted in the 2013 press release: "When I was drawing CATCH, I drew a man with open arms, like a chair that wants to catch you. And it works like that". The release says the chair was released during the Salone del Mobile in Milan, and his studio's page calls it the earliest result of the working relationship with &Tradition, which the studio says started over a steak dinner. Brand director Martin Kornbek Hansen is quoted there: "Our collaboration with Jaime Hayon dates back to when the company was founded in 2010".

Design Language

The studio page describes a comfortable, upholstered chair with a very light touch, whose armrests extend from the padded backrest "like literal limbs". The same text sets Hayon's Mediterranean aesthetic against the heritage of Scandinavian craftsmanship, and Hansen adds: "It has been interesting to see how Hayon interprets and adapts his design to this tradition".
