Origin
Basket is the rattan seating collection that GUBI produces from a design by Joe Colombo. The sofa page dates Colombo's design to the late 1960s, and the specification tables of the sofa and the lounge chair give 1967 as the design year.
Design Language
The name nods to hand-weaving in rattan basketry. A three-seater sofa, a two-seater sofa and a lounge chair make up the collection and share one construction: GUBI replaced the inner fiberglass shell Colombo first used with a steel skeleton, which it calls a more environmentally responsible core that gives the form strength and stability. A hand-woven rattan skin of interlaced strips and oval stakes covers it, a technique GUBI says demands a tremendous degree of skill and craftsmanship.
