Collection Story
Origin
Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni drew Arco for Flos in 1962. The brothers borrowed the long reach of a street lamp and carried it indoors, so that a table or sofa in the middle of a room could be lit from overhead without a point in the ceiling. Flos ranks it among the cornerstones of Italian design history.
Design Language
The lamp is made of three parts that each do one job: a Carrara marble block that balances the arc, a telescopic stainless-steel stem, and a polished aluminium reflector that turns and moves up and down. Flos notes that Arco is one of the few objects to be given a Product Lifetime Achievement Award.
