Collection Story

Origin

HAY's Arbour collection is credited to the Norwegian designers Andreas Engesvik and Daniel Rybakken. In a HAY news item the two describe how it began: with the idea of designing the way one would make a sofa before designing the sofa itself, and the question of how the first sofa would look if it were made today. Their answer was to separate the components.

Design Language

Instead of several people adding layer upon layer to a basic structure, the pillows and covers are made in an upholstery workshop and the frame in a wood workshop, and the parts are put together on delivery. HAY's collection page states the principle as design stemming from construction: a solid wooden frame is combined with soft, organic cushions, in what it calls a clear Scandinavian design language.
