Collection Story

Origin

Alma is an Antonio Citterio design that Flexform dates to 2022 on both of its pages; each sheet carries the heading "ALMA | ANTONIO CITTERIO | 2022". The armchair page opens with the statement that "the Alma family expands" with a new lounge chair, which it says perpetuates the collection's distinctive savoir-faire.

The same page explains the name. From the Latin, Alma means "that which nourishes" and "that which gives life", echoing the verb alere, to sustain or to allow to grow. Flexform finds the spirit of the collection in that root: furniture conceived as the "soul of things", able to accompany everyday life with quiet discretion.

Design Language

Balanced proportions and enveloping lines are the shared vocabulary of both pieces. The armchair is described as sophisticated elegance that is never ostentatious, with a sinuous shell in wood or metal that strikes a balance between solidity and lightness; the dining version is the small armchair of the pair.

Both are built from metal and moulded polyurethane foam (the armchair adds wood) under protective laminated fabric, offered with and without armrests, and neither takes a removable cover in fabric or leather. Bases are stationary in cast aluminium or solid wood, and the aluminium bases come in eight finishes, two of them whites. The dining chair adds a tubular metal base and swivel bases with four or five spokes.
