Vulcano Outdoor Daybed

Overview

Vulcano is a 2019 outdoor daybed by Antonio Citterio for Flexform, built as a chaise longue clad in woven upholstery. Compositional flexibility, a high degree of customisation and materials chosen for outdoor performance are its stated core features.

Construction

316 austenitic stainless steel, a super alloy for outdoor settings, forms the structure. Backrest and armrest are electropolished, epoxy powder-coated or finished in embossed lacquer. The seat cushion is polyurethane foam and the backrest cushion polyurethane foam with polyester fibre; a protective water-repellent laminated fabric covers both.

Weaving as the motif

Woven materials are dear to Flexform and inspired many products in its indoor collection; in Vulcano, weaving becomes the motif that clads the stainless steel structure. Antonio Citterio's 2019 design pairs it with compositional flexibility and a high degree of customisation.

Materials for outdoor performance

The aim was to find just the right materials for optimum outdoor performance. 316 austenitic stainless steel gives the structure its resistance outdoors, the cushions are encased in a breathable water-repellent lining, and the outdoor upholstery fabrics withstand weather, sun, chlorine and salt water.
