Story

From a beechwood chair with strap covers

The story of the Vostra goes back to a 1940s design by the Danish-American designer Jens Risom, a little beechwood chair with strap covers. Hans Knoll, the son of Walter Knoll, took it into his range in the USA and sent it to his father.

Walter Knoll's own version

Walter Knoll reworked the piece into a design of his own, with tubular steel feet and elaborate upholstery. Production began in 1949, and in the 1950s the chair made a courageous statement about casual seating.
