Story
A car headlight, fishing rod rings and a boat cleat
Flos dates Toio to 1962 and credits it to the Castiglioni brothers; it calls it a perfect example of their ready-made design philosophy. The idea started from a car headlight, which sits at the top of a telescopic stem and sends indirect light up into the room.
Parts taken from elsewhere
Fishing rod rings guide the power cable and a boat cleat keeps it coiled, while the transformer stays visible at the base. Flos says this playful fusion of industrial materials and ingenuity also inspired the name, a nod to the word "toy". Flos calls Toio a design icon that has won multiple awards and is part of the permanent collection at MoMA.
