Description

Overview

Designed by Illum Wikkelsø in 1959, the SW50 Sofa is a four-seat design defined by long horizontal proportions, an exposed wooden structure and a visually light profile. GUBI has reintroduced it in its original four-seater format.

Construction

A continuous wooden base anchors the sofa while lifting the upholstered cushions above the floor. The saved version uses oiled oak and Harp by GUBI fabric. GUBI specifies FSC-certified oak and wood from other responsible sources under certificate FSC C176589.

Specifications

Item 10153721 measures 106.3 in wide × 36.2 in deep × 28.8 in high. Its armrest height is 20.1 in, and the specification identifies a four-seat module configuration.

Story

A Restrained Wikkelsø Design

Illum Wikkelsø designed the SW50 in 1959. GUBI presents it as a restrained part of his work: the long horizontal line, open construction and visible wood organize the composition without concealing how the sofa is supported. Its slightly upright sitting position was conceived to encourage conversation and social interaction.

Reintroduced in Its Original Format

GUBI returned the SW50 to production as the original four-seater. The exposed continuous base visually anchors the sofa, while the cushions appear suspended above it, creating a measured rhythm across the full width.
