Description
Irregular upholstered form
Sponge is an armchair by Peter Traag. Edra describes folds that differ from one example to the next, giving every chair an irregular pattern.
Construction
The official sheet specifies a steel frame, polyurethane-foam padding and an integral-polyurethane-foam base. Polyurethane is foamed directly inside an oversized leather cover, which is adapted to the form as it cools. The cover is not removable.
Representative size
The SPG010 drawing gives approximately 94 × 85 × 75 cm, with a 42 cm seat height.
Story
Process as form
Sponge takes its character from its production method. Polyurethane is foamed directly into a leather cover cut larger than the finished chair.
A different pattern each time
During cooling, the cover is fitted to the polyurethane shape. Edra states that this creates wrinkles that are always different, so the irregular surface is part of how each armchair is made.
