Shaal is a 2022 sofa system by Doshi Levien, developed for residential and contract settings. Its central contrast pairs an enclosing outer panel with deep, softly curved cushions.

Construction

Representative two-seat model 6915 uses a covered plywood wraparound panel. Arper specifies differentiated foam densities, removable cushion covers and outer-panel and cushion upholstery that may match or differ. Adjustable feet support installation across configurations.

Specifications

The official drawing for model 6915 prints largest values of 190, 98 and 75 cm without axis labels. The broader range adds central, end and corner units, plus chaise, daybed and ottoman formats.

Structure around softness

Arper describes Shaal as a basket of pillows: an outer shell holds the cushions while keeping their generous volume legible. This relationship gives the sofa its combination of enclosure and visual lightness.

Social configurations

Doshi Levien envisioned the new modules for informal work as well as family use. The range moves from freestanding sofas to connected elements, letting the same cushioned language support private or shared arrangements.
