Description

Overview

The Pipe armchair is by Sebastian Herkner for Moroso and was presented at the Salone del Mobile in Milan in 2015. An 80 mm steel tube draws its sledge-inspired base, and two soft, independent volumes rest on it: a rounded seat and a cylindrical backrest.

Construction

The seat has a wooden structure covered with differentiated-density polyurethane foam. The backrest is cold-injected polyurethane foam. The base is tubular steel in chrome-plated, gold chrome-plated or high-gloss coloured finishes, five finishes in all. Covers are not removable. Seat height is 38 cm, measured without load.

Story

Making a form lighter by making it bigger

While seating design keeps chasing ever thinner structures, the Pipe armchair heads in the opposite direction. The steel tube is no longer something to hide but the protagonist of the design, a solid yet dynamic base in the shape of a sledge. Sebastian Herkner presented the armchair with Moroso in Milan in 2015.

Two soft volumes

The full, rounded seat is welcoming yet supportive. A cylindrical backrest sits lightly on the uprights and holds the back like a big cushion. It is an informal seat that invites you to let go rather than sit up straight, and oversize never becomes excess: the result is lightness and immediacy. Seat and backrest can be dressed differently, and the contrast between them gives the chair its personal expression.
