Description

Overview

The Multi-Lite Pendant by Louis Weisdorf (designed 1972) is a GUBI pendant built around two opposing, mobile shades. By rotating each shade individually, the lamp can be set in many combinations, so the light is directed upwards, downwards or cast as an asymmetrical art light. GUBI describes it as a design that embraces the golden era of Danish design and fits into any domestic setting.

Construction

Two concentric cylinders form the core of the lamp. A metal ring encompasses them and anchors the two quarter-spherical shades, which turn on the ring. Base, shades and ceiling canopy are made of steel, with a brass, chrome or black brass base and a range of lacquered or plated shade finishes.

Story

A Lamp That Changes With Its User

Louis Weisdorf made the drawings for the Multi-Lite in 1972. According to GUBI, the design was an exception to his habit of building lamps from many repeating elements, as in his Turbo Pendant. Instead it reflects his passion for diversity and for objects the user can change: simply turning the shades transforms both the look of the lamp and the light it gives.

From Drawing to Icon

Two cylinders, a metal ring and a pair of rotating quarter-sphere shades make up the whole design. GUBI produces it today as part of the Multi-Lite collection, which has grown from the pendant to floor, table, portable and wall versions.
