Description

Overview

Knotted Chair is a small indoor armchair by Marcel Wanders, designed in 1996. Cappellini describes it as an adult interpretation of the tiny chairs used to decorate a doll's house.

Construction

The structure is made of "knotted" rope: an inner carbon core covered with aramide fibre, finished with epoxy resin to stiffen the structure. The page describes the macramé technique that inspired the design as revisited in this structure.

Specifications

The product sheet drawing gives 53 x 64 x 69 cm (KC_1). The sheet states the country of origin as the Netherlands.

Story

From doll's house chair to collector's piece

Cappellini describes the Knotted Chair as a brilliant adult interpretation of the tiny chairs that decorate a doll's house. Marcel Wanders designed it, and the macramé technique behind it is reworked into a structure of carbon covered with aramide fibre cord and coated with epoxy resin.

Museum collections

Cappellini says the MoMA in New York, the V&A Museum in London and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam each hold the chair in their permanent collections. By removing the distinction between artisanship and industrial production, Wanders turned the chair into a work of art meant to be kept in the home.
