Description

Overview

Josephine is a sofa by Gordon Guillaumier, 2017, drawn to move away from the sharp, boxy outlines of modern sofas. The rounded armrests and the backrest are three separate pieces that surround the seat like the petals of a flower.

Construction

The seat is polyurethane foam of differentiated density. In the sides and backs, cold injected polyurethane and polyester fiber wrap an internal wooden structure. The feet are painted ash or lacquered beech with polyethylene glides, in three base finishes. Covers stay fixed and are not removable.

Story

A shape freed from boxy sofas

Josephine started from a wish to be freed from the sharp, boxy shapes of modern sofas. Its armrests and backrest are rounded and elegant, three separate pieces gathered around the seat like flower petals, and the proportions are delicate. The seat is visibly raised off the ground, which makes the sofa look lighter. The name is a tribute to Josephine Baker, an emancipated woman and icon of provocation in the Thirties.

Seat, sides and feet

The seat is polyurethane foam of differentiated density, while the sides and backs are cold injected polyurethane with polyester fiber over an internal wooden structure. Under the sofa, polyethylene glides sit below feet in painted ash or lacquered beech.
