Description

Overview

Imitating the look of folded paper yet shaped in metal, the Folded Shelves by Johan Van Hengel for Muuto have a contemporary, functional character. Muuto presents them as a modern and friendly way to add storage to any home or professional space. The Grey version (FLDSH29A05) measures 40 cm in height.

Construction

The shelves are made from a 1.5 mm sheet of steel that is laser cut and then folded, finished with an acrylic powder coating. Two hooks and two bolts for mounting on the wall are included.

Specifications

Length 29.4 cm x Width 8 cm x Depth 8 cm x Height 40 cm (Grey, FLDSH29A05).

Story

Aesthetic order

The Aesthetic Order story for the Folded Shelves names the layers within the design as its most unique aspect: they change as objects are placed on the shelves. Left bare, the shelves bring something sculptural, refined and simple to a room, even when they are not serving a functional use.

A shape that did not exist yet

The same story recounts that Folded was sketched knowing it would be difficult to produce: following the rules for bending metal, the shelves would be impossible to make, so the aim was a shape that did not exist yet. Folded is called a naked product to make your own, by combining sizes and colors or by holding personal objects, and the design is meant to prompt tidiness through its aesthetics.

Muuto's Folded family by Johan Van Hengel turns the look of folded paper into steel: wall shelves, a platform shelf and a trolley with a display pocket.
