Description
Overview
The FK Chair is the original FK design by Preben Fabricius & Jørgen Kastholm, produced by Walter Knoll. Walter Knoll describes it as a bucket chair with clear contours and perfect lines – volume and lightness on a triple star base, with or without castors. It is used on its own or in a group, for conference and residential settings.
Construction
The bucket is made of moulded cold cure foam (models 6725/6726); models 6728/6729 combine an inner shell of moulded cold cure foam with a painted outer shell in high gloss black, matt black or high gloss white. Two upholstery types are offered: Upholstery classic and Upholstery soft, with cold cure foam in seat and back. The aluminium base is mirror polished or powder coated matt black, as a 3-star swivel base with glides (3G) or a 5-star swivel base with castors (5R) with an optional height-adjustable tilt mechanism.
Specifications
- 6725-3G (high back, 3-star base): W 70 × D 72 × H 104 cm, seat height 45 cm, seat depth 42 cm, armrest height 67 cm
- 6726-3G (low back): W 70 × D 72 × H 89 cm
- 6725-5R (castors): W 70 × D 68 × H 105–117 cm, seat height 46–56 cm
Story
A New Formal Language
Walter Knoll's press release calls the FK classic design history: in the sixties the bucket seat laid down markers for a new formal language – the unique form, the clear contours, the perfect lines. Bucket and three-star base, volume and lightness, form a graphic image of compelling conciseness. The design was presented to a wide audience for the first time at the Cologne Furniture Fair in 1967.
Good Form
In 1969 the chair was the first-ever recipient of the German Federal Prize for "Good Form" and became an icon of minimalism. The Danish designers, who studied under Finn Juhl, aimed for timelessness, following the functional-aesthetic tradition of Scandinavian design and the Bauhaus. Today the FK remains one of Walter Knoll's most iconic designs.
