Description

Overview

The Discocó is a pendant lamp designed by Christophe Mathieu for Marset in 2008, which Marset calls the most iconic design in its collection. Discs attached to a chrome-covered sphere give direct downward light together with reflected and indirect light, creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow around the lamp. Even switched off, it is a sculptural object that fills the space.

Construction

The discs are ABS, the central sphere is chromed metal and the canopy is metal. The lamp is hardwired with a white cord and white canopy. A wooden edition, offered only as the Discocó 68, has discs of 4 mm pressed American oak, a black chrome sphere and a black cord and canopy.

Story

Light that plays

Christophe Mathieu says the Discocó still works because of its light: direct downwards, reflected and indirect, with each disc acting as a reflector so that it is never a boring lamp. Further reflections dance off the chrome sphere at its core, and Mathieu keeps one hanging above his own dining table.

From plastic to oak

Marset later added an oak edition. Making wood look light without conveying apparent or real weight was a challenge, so the wooden Discocó is made only as a pendant with a 68 cm diameter, with its inner metal structure in a graphite nickel finish.
