Description
Overview
The December chair is a lounge chair by Jasper Morrison and Wataru Kumano, designed in 2012 for Nikari's 12 Designs for Nature collection. Nikari describes it as a carefully balanced solid wood frame with an upholstery in strong, natural materials. The December range, which Nikari lists as two lounge chairs and an ottoman, shares a light, minimalist look and a feel of fine craftsmanship. Nikari writes that, with its simple Nordic design, the chair suits modern and more traditional interiors, in private homes and in public contexts such as hotels, restaurants and lobby areas.
Construction
The frame is available in oiled ash or oak, and oak also comes with a smoked oak stain. The upholstery options are 100% linen canvas and natural-tanned leather in nude, cognac or black. Nikari notes that the upholstery is changeable. Nikari states that every solid wooden piece it makes is made in Finland, from certified wood from Northern Europe.

Story
12 Designs for Nature
For the project, called Project 2012 Designs for Nature, Nikari invited twelve designers or design studios to answer its design philosophy with a product. Nikari works with WWF Finland, and part of the sales price goes to forest protection worldwide. The collection's page lists April, August Industry, December, December Ottoman, February, July, November Light and October Light among its pieces.
From kit to finished chair
Wataru Kumano's own site says the chair and ottoman have linen or leather seats, structured by ash or oak frames, and that they were produced by Nikari in Fiskars, Finland. It dates them to 2012, when Nikari launched one piece of furniture a month for a year, and says a lounge variant with arms followed in 2016. Kumano's site adds that the chair was initially intended to be assembled at home and is now available pre-assembled.
