Description

Overview

Chair_One is a stacking chair by Konstantin Grcic for Magis; the product page and the technical sheet read "Konstantin Grcic, 2003". The Family_One catalogue describes a complex geometry, an engineering piece whose shell is built from flat triangular elements set at angles to one another, in the catalogue's comparison like a football, giving a three-dimensional form. This is the version on four legs (Chair_One with legs); the catalogue also shows the same seat on a concrete base.

Construction

The seat is die-cast aluminium, treated with sputtered fluorinated titanium and painted in polyester powder. The legs are anodised aluminium in black (art. SD461, seat painted black) or painted aluminium (art. SD5460). The sheet calls the chair stackable and suitable for outdoor use, the page adds that it is flame-retardant, and a Magis trolley is available.

Story

How the shell is made

The Family_One catalogue describes the casting as a matter of seconds: the hot, liquid aluminium is pressed through special channels into the heated form, the tool opens after cooling to release the seating shell, and the excess material is removed and re-melted.

The four-leg chair

On the four-leg version, the legs are black anodised aluminium (SD461) or painted aluminium (SD5460). The sheet lists six colours and cushions for indoor and outdoor use.
