Description

Overview

The CH468 Oculus Chair is an upholstered lounge chair on a stainless steel frame, designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1960 and first put into production by Carl Hansen & Søn in 2010. The name is the Latin word for eye and refers to the eye-shaped stitching in the back upholstery.

Story

A Chair Found in the Studio

Carl Hansen & Søn calls the production history of the Oculus Chair a little out of the ordinary. On a visit to Wegner's design studio the company noticed photographs and a small clay model of an easy chair from the 1960s. Once the original technical drawings had been retrieved and a full-size prototype made in 1960 could be studied, production became possible in 2010.

The Eye and the Back

The manufacturer explains that the shape lets the shoulder blades sink back into the chair, which gives rest to both neck and back.
