CH327 Dining Table

Overview

The CH327 is a solid wood dining table that Hans J. Wegner designed in 1962. Its unusual construction makes the tabletop appear almost to float; the edges are softened and the rounded legs narrow towards the floor.

Construction

• Top: grain along the length, carried by 3 distinct rails with a side rail under each side
• Gap: a space between side rail and top creates the floating impression
• Legs: two detachable legs at each end joined by a cross-stretcher
• Wood: FSC™ Mix-certified oak or beech; the teak/oak version has a teak top on oak legs

Specifications

• 190 × 95 cm, H 72 cm (six people); 248 × 95 cm (eight people)
• Both lengths take a 40 cm extension plate at each end, for 10 or 12 people
• CH327T insert leaf in MDF, grey or black, sold separately

A table seen from the side

Carl Hansen & Søn calls the CH327 a good example of how creativity combined with excellent craftsmanship can produce a different and exciting design. In the manufacturer's description a space between the side rails and the tabletop gives the impression that the top is floating.

How it is braced

The legs and cross-stretchers hold the table across its width and the side rails hold it along its length. The side rails are joined higher at the legs and narrower between them, which gives more room for seated people.
