Overview
Basilan is a chair in which, according to Tacchini, design and artisanal tradition converge. The page presents it as one of the most original moments in the design research of Afra and Tobia Scarpa.
Construction
The structure is rattan with leather weaving, held by metal joints. An optional cushion or backrest is available, and the final cover is fabric or leather. The rattan is offered in one finish, T215 matt chocolate stained rattan.
Specifications
The reference model, code 0BSLSD01, measures 46 W x 50 D x 86 H cm.
Story
A modular rattan framework
Tacchini ties Basilan to material exploration and to construction techniques it calls unprecedented in 1970s Italian design. The modular rattan framework, with metal details and leather bindings, serves at once as structure, ornament and spatial definition.
Weaving as narrative
The manufacturer writes that the material carries the memory of the hands that wove it, and that the woven surfaces balance visual lightness with structural solidity.
