Overview
Aside is a side chair by Mark Goetz that brings task-chair qualities to guest and multipurpose seating. Herman Miller describes it as suitable for short visits or extended sitting.
Construction
The petal-shaped back curves inward for lumbar support. A contoured seat uses a double thickness of high-density foam, while its sloping front edge reduces pressure on the thighs. Rear legs arc behind the seat to help protect the back when the chair meets a wall.
Options
Aside is available with casters or glides. Its official page also states that the chair is 85 percent recyclable and offers a broad range of color and material choices.
Story
Challenging the Side-Chair Brief
Herman Miller asked Mark Goetz to rethink the assumption that a side chair did not need sustained comfort. Goetz responded with supportive contours, a high and wide back, and a double-thick cushion rather than treating the chair as an occasional perch.
Comfort and Versatility
The resulting design combines a distinctive profile with details intended for longer sitting. Its mobile and stationary base choices allow the same chair concept to serve as pull-up seating or guest seating beside a workstation.
