Description

Overview

The 289 chair was designed by Pierre Guariche and manufactured by Les Huchers de Minvielle during the 1950s and 1960s. It combines functionality, lightness and minimalist elegance within French modernist design.

Construction

Two moulded beech plywood shells form the seat and backrest structures. This version has a stained-ash base. The seat and back contain high-resilience Bultex polyurethane foam. Polyester quilting weighing 110 g/m² covers both sections.

Specifications

The chair is 480 mm wide, 525 mm deep and 860 mm high. Seat height is 480 mm and weight is 8 kg. The exterior is finished with 3 mm baguette stitching, and the cover is fully removable by a professional.

Story

Guariche and the 289 chair

Pierre Guariche designed the 289 chair with an emphasis on ergonomics and simplicity. Ligne Roset links the design to the French modernist period and notes Guariche's use of materials that were innovative at the time, including tubular metal and moulded plywood.

A light shell construction

The seat and back are built as separate moulded beech plywood shells. In this stained-ash-base version, the upholstered shells are supported by the timber frame, while high-resilience Bultex polyurethane foam and polyester quilting provide the comfort layers.
