Biography

Background

Simon Karkov graduated in architecture from the Danish Academy of Architecture and has worked for several architecture offices in Denmark since the sixties. In his last ten working years he mainly worked for the Municipality of Frederiksberg, leaving his mark on projects such as Frederiksberg Hospital and Frederiksberg Gymnasium. He now spends his retirement in Turkey working on different projects.

Signature Style

Karkov draws a sketch for every idea, turns it into a model and adjusts the model over time until a final prototype can be made. He dreams of developing new ways of designing furniture and larger objects through the self-assembly concept, and says Norm 69 is inspired by flowers and cones.

Notable Works

  • Norm 69 lamp, designed in 1969 and made of 69 parts that are assembled without tools or glue
  • Norm 06 lamp, listed with Norm 69 on his Normann Copenhagen designer page

Legacy

Norm 69 lay in a loft for many years until a collaboration with the start-up Normann Copenhagen began in 2001. It won the Formlandprisen in 2002 and Best Item at IMM Cologne in 2003.
