Biography
Background
Nik Aelbrecht is a Belgian designer based in Brussels. He holds a degree in architecture from Luca School of Arts in Brussels and from Strathclyde University in Glasgow, and studied furniture design at Thomas More in Mechelen, Belgium. He is trained as an architect but operates as a designer. After working as a designer for several architecture and design studios, he widened his focus to furniture design and development, gaining experience from tailor-made metal furniture to high-end kitchen systems. In 2020 he founded his own design studio in Brussels.
Signature Style
His designs are seemingly effortless but profoundly complex, formulated by challenging conventional typologies, traditional production processes, and the balance and structure of objects. He designs as he is: inquisitive, intuitive, genuine and straightforward, looking for the finest line, simple but generous.
Notable Works
For Cappellini he designed the Openup table. His studio also made the SODA office kitchen in 2021, in powder-coated aluminium with custom perforations, and the TP Cabinet, an open closet in sanded aluminium launched in 2024 at For the Now in Brussels. The studio works with several brands and architecture offices on objects ranging from door handles to tailor-made aluminium kitchens.
Legacy
Aelbrecht founded his Brussels studio in 2020, and Openup is his design for Cappellini.
