Biography
Background
Matěj Janský is a Prague-born designer. According to Cappellini, he and Cyril Dunděra were both born in Prague in the 1990s and became friends at sixteen in a Furniture Studio class at an arts and crafts school. His studies took in architecture at CTU Prague, furniture and interior design at UMPRUM and a period at Konstfack in Stockholm.
Signature Style
JanskyDundera, the studio he founded with Dunděra, works across furniture, interiors and exhibition installations, and describes its approach to projects as sensitive and respectful, with a distinctive sense of humour. In the 2025 announcement Janský describes long projects as having given the pair complete precision, and says an individual path will let him experiment freely.
Notable Works
- Hiroi lounge chair, designed with Dunděra for Cappellini
- Cheers sofa and the around table, both named on the studio's awards page
- The Technocrat project, a Klatovy apartment and the Czech Mush Room pavilion
Legacy
After the studio closed in October 2025, Janský is heading, in his own words as reported in the announcement, toward free creation and overlaps in design, while the two designers keep working together on short-term projects.
