Biography
Background
Lucia Mercer trained in landscape architecture at Cornell University and spent a stint studying in the Soviet Union, according to Knoll. She returned to the United States in 1979 to begin an apprenticeship at the Cold Spring Granite Quarry in Ausable Forks, New York.
Signature Style
Knoll says the quarry gave her an intimate understanding of the character and power of granite, and describes her work as geometrically pure and formal yet emotionally expressive.
Notable Works
The Lucia Mercer Collection was designed for Knoll in 1982. The Mercer table from it was reintroduced in 2018.
Legacy
Knoll's shop describes the Mercer table as natural uncoated solid marble, and the product sheet gives the same short account of her training at Cornell University and the quarry in Ausable Forks.
