Biography
Background
Kasper Salto was born on 14 February 1967 in Copenhagen, the son of textile artist Naja Salto and grandson of the ceramist Axel Salto. His first training, in the mid-1980s, was as a cabinetmaker; industrial design at the Royal Danish Academy followed, with a further term at Art Centre College of Design in Switzerland. Wikipedia gives 1994 as the year he graduated from the Danish Design School.
Signature Style
Fritz Hansen describes his work as a well-balanced combination of sleek and minimalist lines, inviting curves and functional comfort, drawn from Danish furniture traditions and international industrial design. Materials are, in Fritz Hansen's phrase, the heroes of his design, and nature is an endless source of inspiration, a blueprint for what Fritz Hansen calls his humancentric design.
Notable Works
He is the designer behind Fritz Hansen's Pluralis table, Little Friend side table and NAP chair series, and Wikipedia also lists the Runner chair for DubaB8 and the ICE chair for Fritz Hansen. He opened his own studio in 1998, with clients that included Fritz Hansen, DubaB8, Engelbrechts and Lightyears, and in 2003 founded Salto & Sigsgaard with the architect Thomas Sigsgaard.
Legacy
His awards include the Red Dot Design Award, Le Grand Prix du Design and Danish Designer of the Year. Wikipedia lists, among others, the ID-prisen for the Runner chair in 1999, the Finn Juul Prize in 2010, the Design Week Award for the NAP chair in 2010 and the Thorvald Bindesbøll medal in 2012.
